United States:

Alaska

Alaska - : Kathy Sue Justus - email:  m.justus@att.net
Is there anybody in Alaska using BioD? I am still reasearching and hope to make some soon with the help of the book "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank."

We are a new co-operative of 'homebrewers' making fuel for a few vehicles, including many members who don't yet drive diesels but are learning along with the rest of us. We are still working on our equipment but have been making lots of 5-gallon bucket batches, and have an equally simple 15-gallon processor in the works, hopefully to someday expand to a 55 gallon drum-based processor. There are a couple of experienced homebrewers in the group, and several people new to the process. The group sprang out of an informal free workshop held in a downtown parking lot, and we hope to keep hosting workshops every couple of months to educate others about just how simple it is. We've been focusing on assembling our setup as cheaply as possible and our (soon-to be expanded to a decent size) 15-gallon processor and all the hardware, etc has so far cost us under $100 (and was functional after about 6 or so man-hours of assembly).  We've had a pretty easy time getting donations of equipment, some from the group members, some from others, and as we don't yet have a permanent space to place the majority of the setup mess we'll be putting the processor on a donated trailer.

I have a 2000 VW Jetta TDI. I've been making biodiesel for about a month and have given talks about biodiesel, and my experience making it, to the Pollution Prevention Team at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab.

Oakland - girl Mark - Biodiesel Skillshare Project and DIY Skillshare Conference skillshare@onebox.com 510 496-2740 ext. 3957
Although I've been a kind of 'armchair' biodiesel enthusiast since the mid-90's (I'm an environmentalist and a mechanic), and have been making biodiesel and teaching introductory workshops for almost two years, I've only had my own diesel vehicles since this fall and am still very new to some of the process (especially cold-weather issues).  I'm running an '81 Datsun truck and an '86 Golf on homemade fuel, and my focus in education is on inexpensive, easily-accessable processor equipment- The workshops I teach involve the Fat Of The Land-style 5-gallon bucket/ drill-powered paint mixer method of making small batches (5-gallon batches take only 15 minutes), and I try to convince people that there's not a huge expensive and complicated outlay of time, expertise, and money involved before they can produce their own fuel. I'm currently spending a lot of my time in Tucson AZ starting up the Tucson Biodiesel Collective. I received a small grant for my biodiesed education project last year, and I'm working on producing my own printed intro for use in workshops.  I'm in touch with others in the Bay Area working on homemade biodiesel, and when I am in town, I'm happy to help Bay Area people trying to get started.

I also originated the DIY Skillshare Conference, now in it's third year (mid-summer) in Berkeley- it's a 4-day gathering featuring free workshops on a variety of hands-on workshops on a variety of do-it-yourself topics with a strong focus on alternative energy and fuels. The next Skillshare should have a very in-depth focus on biodiesel, and I'm looking for folks to come present about SVO conversions as well as other alternative fuels and EV topics (it'll probably be in late June 2002.  Please contact us for more information on either project.

Redway - klarson - email: klarson@appliedpower.com
I live in Humboldt County, CA, (200 miles north of SF on Hwy 101). I have been making biodiesel for several months now. The VeggieVan folks, (Josh and Kaia), gave me much of their "Green Grease Machine" when in California on the end of their tour. Inspired by their work, I have made many large batches (40 gallons) in their kettle.  On Labor Day 2000, the folks up at Humboldt State University's Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT) and I made over 200 gallons of biodiesel to fuel the Hog Farm's Annual "Pignic", a weekend-long concert in Lationville, CA.  In the last months, we have suffered many diesel spills in our pristine hills. I have dreams of powering the hundreds of remotely located diesel generators in our area with locally made biodiesel. I fuel my F-250 diesel truck, (that I use to pick up and deliver oil and biodiesel), with biodiesel.

San Diego - RCOOR - email: zero529@yahoo.com
I'm still gearing up for my first batch of biodiesel; I don't actually own a diesel engine of any sort, so the motivation hasn't really been there. As a chemist/biochemist by profession, I find it fun to think about. I'm looking forward to experimenting, maybe even with alternative catalysts like lipase or biguanides.

San Francisco - David Franke: - email: dfrankel@igc.org
international environmental business lawyer working on global warming issues.  In CA, I want to switch to a biodiesel as soon as possible and want to get biodiesel used in our pilot project for carbon sequestration and sustainable forestry in the Albion Watershed of the Mendocino Redwoods.  In Maui, I'm driving an old Mercedes diesel and just starting with biofuel.  I am interested in working with folks to keep track of Greenhouse gas emissions saved by using biofuel and working out ways of getting credit under Kyoto Protocol.

Boulder - Shawn Antaya - email:   antaya_s@hotmail.com
Been successfully producing and burning biodiesel for several months. Successfully converted my '85 Jetta to burn straight veggie oil. Willing to help anyone in the area with making biodiesel. I'd like to learn more about growing algae and extracting the oil (possible third world applications). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Connecticut

Hampton - Ross - email: ross@ctol.net
(northeast section, Windham County, "Quiet Corner").  Although currently having no actual involvement or experience with biodiesel, I'm quite interested in the concept.

Florida

Summerland Key - Alison Higgins - email: Alison_Higgins@antiochsea.edu

Originally interested in converting my boat to biodiesel, I am now working on a grad school project to bring a biodiesel plant to the South Florida area.  I am very interested in marketing ideas, business plans, development issues, etc that come with the territory.  Am hoping to build a plant/tourist stop in Homestead somewhere.

Also very interested in biodiesel boats (especially those with longevity) for my book, Boat Ecology.  Thanks!

Maui - Shaun Stenshol - email:  info@bio-beetle.com
I have used biodiesel since 1998 and am currently driving a 2000 VW Golf TDI and the only fuel I have put in it is biodiesel made by Pacific Biodiesel, over 45,000 miles so far.  You can read more about my biodiesel experiences at www.bio-beetle.com

Maryland

Eastern Shore - Ron Cascio - email: rcascio@beachin.net
I live and work on Maryland`s Eastern Shore. We buy our biodiesel in bulk from  http://www.worldenergy.net/  and power our 1989 Ford F250 and our 1996 VW Passat wagon with this wonderful fuel. We have gotten our county and the largest town in our area to do a biodiesel pilot project with B20 last fall (2000). The results were good and they are considering using it full time. Presently trying to infect the members of Fred`s VW TDI Club http://www.tdiclub.com/  This fuel combined with these VWs that get 45 to 50 MPG are the "Greenest" cars available in the U.S., puts the hybrids to shame for now.

Pittsfield - Cindy Perkins - email: cperkins@totalnetnh.net
I am just about to begin my first experiments with making BioD. Just getting lye and methanol is turning out to be quite a challenge. I hope to use it all winter in my oil furnace/boiler, and find a diesel for my next car. I also envision beginning a business fabricating and selling BioD processors to small-scale folks like myself. Please contact me with any questions, ideas, support, or comments!

Oregon

Northwest - Michael Pfohman - pfohman@engr.orst.edu
I'm studying Biodiesel as at Oregon State University as a Grad student.  I've driven1200 miles on my own Biodiesel in my VW Jetta.  Just got a Diesel Vanagon that I'm outfitting as an "EcoVan".  Goals include implementing a reactor on campus to power the 15 diesel vehicles.  Research includes reactor design, Politics of Biodiesel in the NW, feedstock (oilseed, and
algae), and the possibility of an alternate Biodiesel Board.  I've been researching this for 9 months now.

I make 20 liters of Biodiesel a week. I'm interested in using Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) for fuel. I live near the Philadelphia Airport and will soon have my parts together.

Texas

San Antonio - James Jackson - email: JOJ@Texas.net
I make my biodiesel in small batches (8 - 10 gals/session) in 1-gallon pickle jars using my pickle jar mixer that I invented. I drive a 1982 VW Rabbit PU on 100% Biodiesel from used vegetable oil.  The odometer is busted, but I estimate over 1000 miles so far on biodiesel.

Vermont

Burlington - My handle is paul b - email: v2fd36@us.ibm.com
I am making biodiesel from waste fryer grease and other vegetable oil sources. I have been making biodiesel since October '99. I am currently running 100% BD in a '89 VW Jetta. I would like to run my off-grid house on a small diesel generator as well. I am also experimenting with biodiesel in an oil-fired furnace. I have made a 20 minute biodiesel video for education purposes. Contact me for details.

Washington

Seattle - Dante - email: dante@attorney-cpa.com
I'm running my 2000 VW Golf TDI on a 1/3 SoyGold 2/3 petrodiesel blend, but am interested in making my own biodiesel since commercial biodiesel in the Seattle area is too expensive to use except as an experiment. I'm also researching federal excise tax issues related to biodiesel.
